Adventure

Acro, Chats, and Marshmallows with Tyler

When Melissa and I moved to Colorado we, surprisingly, already had a couple of college friends in the area. One of these friends is Tyler. Tyler lives in a van, works at REI, and is always on or planning some crazy adventure. A great influence on our lives, if you ask me. One of the things Tyler introduced into our lives a couple of years ago is acro yoga. I am no expert in this practice, but here is a quick definition:

“Acro yoga (also acroyoga or acro for short) is a physical practice that combines yoga and acrobatics. Acroyoga includes many types of partner and group acrobatics in which at least someone is lifted.”

Acro, just like any yoga practice, can range from beginner to advanced moves. The simplest pose, bird, involves the base flying their partner with their feet on the flyers hips. More advanced moves can involve all sorts of spinning and flipping and complicated balancing sequences. I’ve included some examples below. The flow on the right is something Melissa and I were working on last year.

Tyler came to visit one Friday night, after having not seen him in a while. We passed the time catching up, doing acro, roasting marshmallows over the fire. We tried many poses that we had never done before. Some were more successful than others. But, as always, it was a great time.

One of the things we talked about a lot was van life. Tyler currently lives in a small Ford Transit and is soon looking to upgrade. Melissa and I have this dream of also converting a van, and visiting all the national parks in the US. We go back and forth about the timeline of this adventure. Tyler is always trying to convince us sooner rather than later and has offered to go test driving with us on many occasions. We still don’t know what the future holds for us in regards to van life, but we have offered our help to Tyler when he starts his new conversion. Maybe we’ll learn a thing or two. In any case, it would be a lot of fun to help him out!
