Getting the Garden Ready for 2022
When Melissa and I moved to Colorado in June 2021, Josie and Saahil’s garden was in full swing. We helped take care of it while they went on some trips, and were able to harvest some extremely plentiful plants. At the end of the day, though, it still felt like Josie and Saahil’s garden. This year, however, we’ve offered a hand in getting the garden ready!
Garden prep starts much earlier than I ever expected. We started talking about seeds and starts in early March. Once all the planning was complete, the real work started. We had to get new soil and till it in as well as start all the plants indoors that needed to be started.
We ordered 5 cubic yards of soil! For over 800 square feet of garden space. It was a heck of a lot of dirt. Melissa and I rented a wheelbarrow from Home Depot and I am sure glad we did. I do not think we could have gotten everything done that weekend without it.
After taking care of all the dirt, we also checked and beefed up the irrigation system. We also finished off the gardening weekend by starting multiple varieties of each pepper, eggplant, onion, and herbs indoors. We also planted rosemary, brussel sprouts, carrots, and radishes outside.
I am super grateful for the experience to help with getting the garden ready this year. I have big farm dreams in the future, but none of the tangible experience required to make things happen. The garden space this house has is just another reason why I love where I am living.
